Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which the participation in the life of God’s people inaugurated at baptism is confirmed by the laying on of hands, and in those who have been baptised, affirm for themselves the faith into which they have been baptised and their intention to live a life of responsible and committed discipleship.
Through prayer and the laying on of hands, the Church also asks God to give them power through the Holy Spirit to enable them to live in this way.
The Bishop presides at Confirmation services which are usually shared with other local churches and during the service will -
- Encourage those to be confirmed and ask them to renew the vows which were made when they were baptized
- Pray for them that they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in their lives
- Lay hands on the head of each person with the words -
"Confirm O Lord, your servant, with your Holy Spirit”
- Anoint each candidate with the sacred Oil of Chrism
