The organ at St Mary Magdalene was built for Henry Courage (as in the brewery) for his large house – Gravenhurst (now Farney Close School) within the parish.

On his death it was presented to the church in his memory.

The builder T. C. Lewis built the main organ forSouthwark Cathedral and theAspe organ for Westminster Cathedral at around the same time with John Mitchell Courage (Henry's brother) acting as organ consultant.

St. Mary Magdalene Church had also been restored a few years earlier byJohn Francis Bentley, Westminster Cathedral’s architect – an interesting connection.
